Hoi vanuit Mindelo,
Het is al een paar weken sinds wij hebben wat hebben laten horen.
Onze zeil is gerepareerd en nu alleen de onderwaterschip schoon maken en inkopen doen en de touwtjes los. Dan gaan wij een stukje varen.
Wij hebben een dag op Santo Antao doorgebracht. Wij ging vroeg weg met een ferry naar Porto Novo, een eiland tegenover ons. Wij hadden een chauffeur die redelijk goed Engels sprak. En heeft ons de hele dag rond gereden. Wij hebben 2 schitterende valleiën gezien. Zo een mooi landschap met heel veel vegatatie en veel watervallen, scherpe steile hellingen. en zelf een koffie plantage, we hebben uiteraard koffie gekocht die daar is gegroeid en gebrand.
Gezellig gegeten in een klein hotlletje met een piep klein restourantje erbij, voor weinig geld samen met de chauffeur.
Ook weer veel tijd door gebracht in Mindello, terwijl Marjorie aan boord bleef ben ik met de Harlytrapson (fiets) naar de bergen gefietst, dat was voor Marjorie te stijl!! Van daar leuke foto's gemaak.
We hebben ook kennis gemaakt met een kapitein uit de grote vaart die toevallig ook uit Den Herlder komt.
Die ook nog de V Symphony kende.
Vanavond gaat hij mee eten aan boord, maar eerst een voorafje met een Grog gemaakt van suikerreit van Santo Antao..
Het vlees hier, als je kan het kopen is allemaal diepvries vanuit Canaries. De groeten en fruit is ook bijna allemaal geimporteerd van Santo Antao of de Canaries. Uit eten hier is zeer beperkt met weinig groenten en meestal is het vlees erg taai.
Het is hier heel arm met veel bedelaars en over zie je zwerf honden lopen. Maar ze vallen je niet lastig. De meeste auto's hier zijn van die dure grote vierwiel drive's . Het verschil tussen de rijk en arm is erg groot.
6 schepen met Jimmy Cornell als gids van de Sail Odessey gaan morgen de oversteek maken naar Barbados toe.
Grappig dat achter ons schip een ligt rooiboot de vertrekt binnenkort naar Frans Guyana.
Die zijn al vanaf Portugal naar hier gekomen. ze zijn hier gestopt omdat ze te weinig zonnenpanelen hadden. Dus stroom te korte voor de stuurautomaat en de navigatie instrumenten.

It has been a few weeks since we have written something.
Our sail has been repaired and now we only need to clean the underwater hull and do the shopping and untie the strings. Then we will sail a bit.
We spent a day at Santo Antao. We left early with a ferry to Porto Novo, an island opposite us. We had a driver who spoke pretty good English. And he drove us around all day. We have seen 2 beautiful valleys. Such a beautiful landscape with lots of vegetation and lots of waterfalls, sharp steep slopes. and their own a coffee plantation, we have obviously bought coffee that has grown and burned there. It was in a container made with burned matches!!!
Hed a cozy dinner in a small hotel with a tiny little restourantje there, for little money, together with the driver.
Also spent a lot of time in Mindello, while Marjorie stayed on board I cycled to the mountains with the Harlytrapson (bike), that was too steep for Marjorie !! From there made nice pictures.
We also became acquainted with a captain from the major shipping company who happens to be from Den Herlder. He also knew the V Symphony.
Tonight he is going to eat on board, but first an appetizer with a Grog made of sugar cane from Santo Antao ..
The meat here, if you can buy it, is all frozen from the Canaries. The veges and fruit are also almost all imported from Santo Antao or the Canaries. Eating out here is very limited with hardly any vegetables and usually the meat is very tough.
It is very poor here with a lot of beggars and you see stray dogs running around the streets begging. But they do not bother you. Most cars here are those expensive big four wheel drives. The difference between the rich and poor is very big.
6 ships with Jimmy Cornell as guide of the Sail Odessey will make the crossing to Barbados tomorrow.
Funny that behind our ship is a rowboat that leaves soon to French Guyana inthe Carib.
They have already come here from Portugal. They stopped here because they had too few solar panels. So too little power for the autopilot and the navigation instruments.
Hope to get a response soon, especially from the English speaking friends and family.

We´ll return to our boat close to Cadiz at the end of february. There we have to work. We´ll change the door of the entrance, the glases of the Skylights, and the carpet in the boat.

Hello Marjorie and Wim,
From Touchwood’s winter base of Puerto Sherry in the Bay of Cadiz, we back tracked and spent a couple of weeks in the Guadiana River between Spain and Portugal. It is a peaceful spot and it was the best visit of the season for us. As we left the river, sailed along in a f7. We had a discussion about whether we might be better in a camper van but fortunately it eased fairly quickly so the decision is on hold for now.
We took our time (as usual) to enjoy Andalucia boat, bus, train and hire car and then finally entered the Mediterranean in early September.
Much to our surprise, we really loved the Costa Blanca. I suppose we had an idea that ithere would be lots of overweight Brits eating and drinking too much. Its fair to say that that side of things is there, but you don’t have to dig too deep to find a quite different country. It did help that it was late in the season so we avoided the worst crowds. but it was still quite busy.The climate was just lovely and its not hard to understand why it has been a retirement location of choice for many Brits over the last 20 years or so.
We got a good deal for the winter in Aguadulce just along the coast from Almeria. All season we had people telling us that the Med is too hot and too expensive but here we are paying less than we paid for a winter in the Spanish Rias. As we have always said, people tell you this and that, but you just can’t beat going there to find out for yourselves.
This season we are to have a summer at home. We are tired of our house not being decorated as we want it to be, and for once there are none of our children lodging with us, so its a big programme of work to get it done.The re-wiring and new heating systems have left lots of bare plaster and torn wallpaper. One of our sons is emigrating to Canada and we wouldn’t want to be away when they are leaving. Another of our other sons and his wife are having a baby in April so, all things being considered, it makes sense to us to have a year off. We will go to Spain during the summer to make sure that everything is ok and to do but we are happy with the location for Touchwood and are confident she will be safe.

Fijn te horen dat alles zo lekker gaat. Ben benieuwd waar jullie straks weer terecht komen. We hebben al veel van het eiland gezien door televisieprogramma "Helemaal het einde". Wat een andere wereld he?
